Tropical Storm Bertha, initially viewed as a significant threat, made landfall on the US Gulf Coast yesterday, causing surprisingly little damage. The diminished impact is largely attributed to the strengthening El Niño weather phenomenon, which has acted as a natural bulwark against the storm's full destructive potential.
NPR National reported that the storm's ferocity was considerably blunted by prevailing atmospheric conditions linked to El Niño. This meteorological pattern, characterised by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, typically increases wind shear in the Atlantic, hindering tropical storm development and intensity. While residents in affected coastal regions braced for the worst, early assessments suggest property damage and flooding were minimal, sparing communities from the multi-million dollar clean-up operations often associated with such weather events.
El Niño's Unexpected Shield
For many coastal communities, Bertha's arrival had echoes of past devastating hurricanes. However, meteorologists had been closely tracking the interplay between the brewing storm and the developing El Niño.
