Horse deaths cast pall on California’s famed Santa Anita Park, as 28th animal dies

Two more horses suffered fatal injuries on May 17 and 19. Then Kochees, a 9-year-old gelding, became the 26th horse to die when he was put down May 26, leading to calls for another course closure. River Derby, an unraced 2-year-old, died after fracturing his leg June 5. Formal Dude, a 4-year-old gelding, injured its pelvis during a race June 8. Even after 28 deaths, Santa Anita is refusing to suspend racing Sunday.
