The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a “phased reopening” of the country’s southern cattle ports, which were abruptly shut down in May following the alarming detection of a New World Screwworm (NWS) outbreak. From August 24, the livestock port in Douglas, Arizona, will begin accepting cattle once more, with other key ports in Texas and New Mexico expected to follow suit in the ensuing weeks.
