Concerns are intensifying for the welfare of 26-year-old Sophie Taylor from Perth, who vanished during a solo trip through California and Nevada, after a haunting video surfaced showing her just hours before she was last seen. The footage, filmed on Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses by an American social media influencer, inadvertently captured Ms Taylor in the background, walking alone on a bustling Las Vegas street.
Unsettling Sighting in Sin City
The eerie video, obtained by the NY Post Metro, depicts Ms Taylor clad in a distinctive pink dress, seemingly looking into a shop window on a vibrant Las Vegas strip. The timestamp on the footage places her there on the evening of October 27, mere hours before her reported disappearance. Her family last heard from her earlier that day, when she messaged her parents to say she was enjoying her solo adventure.
Ms Taylor had embarked on a three-week backpacking excursion across the American Southwest, planning to visit national parks and major cities. Her itinerary included stops in Los Angeles, Zion National Park, and Las Vegas. Her solo journey, meticulously planned and regularly updated with family, came to an abrupt halt following this last sighting.
The Unintended Witness
The influencer, who posts under the handle 'VegasVibesGuy' and wishes to remain anonymous, told the NY Post Metro that he was reviewing footage for a routine ‘day in the life’ video when he noticed Ms Taylor. “It was just by chance,” he explained. “I was filming a walk-through of the Strip, showing off the nightlife, and then I saw the news report about the missing Australian. Something twigged, and I went back through my recent videos. And there she was. It’s pretty unsettling to know I was unknowingly filming someone who would soon vanish.”
He promptly contacted local authorities and the Australian Consulate, providing them with the unedited footage. The video has since been shared widely by law enforcement in the hope that it might jog someone’s memory or provide further clues regarding Ms Taylor’s movements.
A Perplexing Disappearance
Sophie’s family in Perth has expressed their profound distress. Her father, David Taylor, spoke briefly to the Australian press, stating, “We are just desperate for any information. Sophie is a smart, resourceful young woman. For her to go silent like this is completely out of character. We just want her home.” He confirmed that all attempts to contact her phone have gone straight to voicemail, and there has been no activity on her social media accounts since late October.
Friends describe Ms Taylor as an avid traveller, always meticulous with her plans and safety precautions. “She always checked in,” said her university friend, Chloe Smith. “Whether it was a hike in the Blue Mountains or a trip overseas, she’d send us updates. For her to just disappear like this is truly terrifying.”
Urgent Appeals for Information
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has launched an extensive search operation, working closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) due to the international nature of the case. They are appealing to anyone who may have seen Ms Taylor in the days leading up to or following October 27 to come forward. She is described as approximately 165cm tall, with blonde hair and blue eyes. At the time of her last known sighting, she was wearing a pink dress and white sneakers.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to Ms Taylor's family and is liaising with US authorities. A GoFundMe page has been established by Sophie’s friends to help cover potential search costs and her family’s travel to the United States, raising over $25,000 AUD in just two days. The global community holds its breath, hoping for a safe return for the young Australian backpacker.
