New York police are investigating the horrific death of a young mother in Astoria, Queens, after her husband, Joseph Azzaretto, 33, was captured on CCTV footage calmly walking to his minivan and driving away from their shared home. The footage, obtained by the NY Post Metro, was recorded mere hours before officers discovered Azzaretto’s body in a nearby park, in what authorities believe was an apparent suicide by hanging.

Police were called to the couple's home on 14th Street near 31st Avenue just after 3:15 pm on Sunday, following reports of a domestic disturbance. Inside, they found 32-year-old Mary Azzaretto with multiple stab wounds to her torso. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

Disturbing Last Sightings

The NY Post Metro reported a harrowing timeline of events. Chilling security footage shows Joseph Azzaretto, dressed in a grey hooded sweatshirt and dark trousers, walking with an unnerving composure towards a parked minivan. He then drives away, leaving behind the scene where his wife and the mother of their child lay deceased. This footage has sent shockwaves through the quiet Queens neighbourhood.

According to police sources cited by the NY Post Metro, officers located Azzaretto’s body later that evening, around 6:40 pm, in Astoria Park. He was found hanging from a tree, approximately 1.5 kilometres from the couple's residence. The New York medical examiner will determine the official cause of death for both individuals, but police are treating Mary Azzaretto’s death as a homicide and Joseph Azzaretto’s as a likely suicide.

A Community in Shock

Neighbours of the Azzaretto family have expressed their shock and grief at the tragic turn of events. Many described the couple as seemingly quiet and unremarkable, making the brutality of the alleged crime all the more unsettling. The couple has a young child, who sources indicate was not present in the home at the time of the alleged murder. The child is reportedly now in the care of relatives.

Detectives have not yet publicly released any potential motive for the alleged murder-suicide. The investigation is ongoing, with police attempting to piece together the circumstances leading up to the horrific incident. Forensic teams were seen working at the Queens residence for several hours into Sunday evening, meticulously gathering evidence.

Unravelling a Private Tragedy

The immediate aftermath saw a significant police presence in the area, with cordons erected around both the family home and the section of Astoria Park where Joseph Azzaretto's body was discovered. Local residents are grappling with the reality of such a violent event unfolding in their community. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the private struggles that can exist behind closed doors, often invisible to neighbours and casual acquaintances.

Authorities are appealing for anyone with further information related to the case to come forward. The tragedy underscores the devastating impact of domestic violence, leaving a family shattered and a community searching for answers in the face of incomprehensible loss. The cost, in terms of both human lives and the ongoing emotional toll on those affected, is immeasurable.
