NEW YORK CITY – A dream holiday to the Big Apple has turned into a nightmarish ordeal for two Australian tourists, aged 28 and 31, after they were brutally stabbed in a random attack in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen district. The incident, which occurred just after 1:45 AM on Wednesday (local time), saw both men knifed in the back by an unknown assailant.
The younger of the two men suffered multiple stab wounds and is currently in a critical but stable condition at Bellevue Hospital. His companion, 31, is stable with a single stab wound to his back. The identities of the victims have not been officially released, but the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to two Australians involved in an incident in New York.
Bloodied Encounter on Eighth Avenue
The violent encounter unfolded on Eighth Avenue near West 46th Street, a bustling area typically teeming with late-night revellers and Broadway show-goers. According to sources cited by NY Post Metro, the two Australians were reportedly involved in an altercation with a stranger when the situation escalated rapidly.
“The call came in shortly after 1:45 AM about a dispute on the street that turned violent,” a New York Police Department (NYPD) spokesperson told local media. “Officers arrived to find two victims with stab wounds. Our investigation is ongoing, and we are reviewing security footage from the area.”
Witnesses reportedly described a chaotic scene, with paramedics and police swarming the area as the two men lay injured on the pavement. The attacker fled the scene immediately after the incident and remains at large. NYPD has not yet released a description of the suspect, but detectives are working to piece together the sequence of events leading to the stabbings.
