A seemingly selfless act of protection has backfired spectacularly for a Sydney man, whose fabricated tale to police has resulted in his girlfriend being charged with attempted murder after he sustained multiple stab wounds in their home.
NSW Police were called to a unit in Double Bay early on Tuesday morning following reports of a domestic incident. What they found was a man in his late 30s with significant stab injuries, requiring immediate hospitalisation. His initial story to officers, however, raised immediate suspicions.
A Web of Deceit Unravels
According to NSW Police, the man, whose identity has not been released, initially claimed he had been attacked by an unknown assailant during a random home invasion. He described a shadowy figure, providing vague details designed to deflect attention from his partner, a 32-year-old woman also residing at the address. This elaborate narrative, however, quickly began to fray under police scrutiny. Detectives noted inconsistencies in his account and the lack of any forced entry into the apartment.
"The initial report painted a picture of a random act of violence, but several elements just didn't add up," a NSW Police spokesperson stated, adding that forensic examination of the scene contradicted the man's version of events. "The evidence on the ground, combined with the nature of the injuries, led our officers to believe there was more to this story."
Girlfriend’s Alibi Crumbles
Further investigation revealed that the girlfriend's alibi, which she had seemingly corroborated with her partner, was also riddled with inaccuracies. While the man was undergoing emergency treatment for his injuries, which included several deep stab wounds to his torso and limbs, police interviewed the woman. He reportedly admitted to police that his girlfriend was responsible for his injuries, and that he had fabricated the home invasion story in an attempt to protect her from legal consequences. This admission led to a rapid escalation in the police investigation.
The woman was subsequently arrested at the Double Bay unit later that afternoon. She has been charged with attempted murder and grievous bodily harm with intent. She was refused bail and is expected to appear in Waverley Local Court on Wednesday morning. The man remains in a stable but serious condition at St Vincent's Hospital, where he is recovering from his injuries.
